Yoga is considered to be not only a good way to get strong and flexible, but also to relieve stress. But, why? What it is about this practice that enhances our focus and mind control, and promotes ease? Does the practice have to be restorative or yin to have that effect? Have you wondered just what makes yoga more than exercise?
It’s no secret to my students that while I love a good physical yoga practice, I really love the philosophy. So, in this series, we will visit some basics of both.
In each of 5 classes we will learn about
- What Yoga says about how we interact with the world, and how we interact with ourselves (The Yamas and Niyamas)
- Deeper discussion about alignment and benefits of the poses (Asana)
- Special breathing exercises (Pranayama)
- Techniques to focus and calm the mind (Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi)
Each class begins with about 10 minutes of philosophy discussion, followed by movement, breathing and mind-calming techniques.
My goal in this series is to provide the newer student with a much better understanding of the practice of Yoga, and offer a refresher to more experienced students. The physical practice is all levels (plenty of challenges, plenty of ways to adjust).
